OHS Band Members Headed to State

Thirteen Olney High School Band students will attend the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Pflugerville during Memorial Day weekend. Sophomores Michael L. (Class I trombone solo) and Melanie A. (Class I piano solo) will perform their solos, qualifying for state competition in February.   Michael will perform “Romance” by Jorgensen and Melanie will perform  “Waltz in b minor” Op.69, No. 2 by Chopin.  Michael, Melanie, and recent OHS graduate Amber M. will also take the State Music Theory Exam. Members of the mixed clarinet trio of freshman Jenny F. (bass clarinet), junior Olivia K. and senior Amber M., both on Bb soprano clarinet will also perform “Variations on ‘La ci Darem”’ by Ludwig von Beethoven (arranged by Merriman) for critiques and rating. Brass quintet members receiving a first division in February and advancing to the state competition  include juniors Tristen B. and Hayley O. (trumpet), recent graduate  Brent M. (French horn), sophomore Michael L. (trombone), and junior Erik C. (euphonium). They will perform “Suite for Brass Quintet” by Samuel Scheidt (adapted by Douglass Green). Recent graduate Darian A., juniors Pie C.t and La’Anna G., sophomore Melanie A. and freshman Gabe G. performed as members of the OHS percussion ensemble.  Their performance selection is “Overture for Percussion” by Anthony J. Cirone.
