High School & Junior High Bands Excel at UIL

Concert bands from Olney High School performed well at the annual UIL Region 7 Concert and Sight-reading Evaluation on Wednesday, April 4.  The competition was held at Wichita Falls High School. Symphonic Band (Varsity) members earned straight first-division ratings in both the Concert and Sight-reading portions of the evaluation.  This is the sixth consecutive three-event Sweepstakes Award earned by the group, which includes a first-division rating in Marching from the October contest. Symphonic Band program included “American River Songs” by Pierre LaPlant, “Benediction” by John Stevens, and “Cheerio March” by Edwin Franko Goldman, edited by Johnnie Vinson.  Conductor for the group is Mr. Rodney Bennett. Concert Band (Non-Varsity) members earned 1-2-1 ratings in their concert performance, earning a first division.  The group received straight ones in the sight-reading evaluation, resulting in a first division.  The OHS Concert Band received a two-event Sweepstakes Award for their outstanding performance.  This the first time in history that Olney HS has take two high school bands to U.I.L. competition.  Having two performing high school bands is very rare at the   Class AA level. Concert Band selections included “Monterey March” by Pierre LaPlante, “A Song of Hope” by James Swearingen, and “Westridge Overture” by James Barnes. Mrs. Marilyn Bennett conducted the Concert Band.

Olney Junior High Band members performed on Thursday, April 5 for their UIL evaluations.  Selections for the concert portion of the contest included “On the Move” (March) by Darrington White, “Sea Song Trilogy” arranged by Anne McGinty, and “Courtland County Festival” by William Owens.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Bennett conducted the concert portion, while Mr. Bennett conducted the sight-reading portion of the evaluation.

Spring concerts for the groups are Sunday, April 28 for the Sixth Grade Beginners and Junior High Bands at 2:30 p.m. and Tuesday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. for the Symphonic and Concert Bands. Concerts are open to the public and there is no admission charge.
